The experience
This is a Cesarine experience: part of Italy's network of home cooks who open their kitchens to small groups. You arrive at a local's home in Messina and watch them prepare the day's menu: a seasonal starter like focaccia, caponata or arancini; fresh pasta made by hand, perhaps with sardines, cauliflower or the local 'ncaciata; and a Sicilian dessert such as cannoli, cassata or n'zuddi biscuits. The cook explains the recipes as they work, many of them passed down through family cookbooks and generations.
After the demonstration, you sit at the same table and eat what was just made. Water, a selection of regional red and white wines, and coffee come with the meal. The whole experience unfolds over about two and a half hours in the cook's own home, and you're welcome to ask questions and connect with the host throughout. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need them.
What’s included
- The three-course meal (seasonal starter, fresh pasta and Sicilian dessert).
- the show cooking demonstration where you watch the dishes prepared.
