Snorkeling Cinque Terre: Five Villages from Water
Five villages, one boat, the view nobody gets from the trail
A daytime boat tour departing from Levanto that takes you past all five Cinque Terre villages—Monterosso, Vernazzo, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore—with swim and snorkeling stops chosen by the captain based on sea conditions that morning. The boat is hybrid-engine, the guide speaks English and Italian, and the aperitivo with local snacks and free wine, prosecco and beer comes aboard while you float between villages.
Step-by-step itinerary
Cinque Terre boat tour and swim
- Embark from Levanto on boat
- View Monterosso old and new town
- Admire Vernazza from the sea
- Stop at Guvano beach for swim and aperitivo
- See Corniglia from the sea
- Admire Manarola from the sea
- View Riomaggiore from the sea
- Swim and snorkel in marine park
The Experience
You board in Levanto and head into the Cinque Terre marine park, where the captain reads the waves and picks the best snorkeling stop of the day—usually near Guvano beach, where the water stays clear and shallow enough to see the seafloor. The five villages pass by one after another from a vantage point the hiking trails never offer: Monterosso with its famous Gigante statue rising from the rocks, Vernazzo clinging to its harbor, Corniglia perched highest above the sea, Manarola's pastel houses stacked like a child's blocks, and finally Riomaggiore before the boat turns back toward Levanto. The captain and guide—Lynda, who knows these waters and their moods—share stories about each village as you approach, so the colors and the history arrive together.
The swim and snorkeling happen at whichever stop has the calmest water that day; you get snorkeling equipment on board, and the guide stays in the water with you. Before or after, depending on timing, the aperitivo arrives: local delicacies, wine, prosecco and beer for adults, soda and snacks for everyone else. The boat has a restroom, and at 3.5 hours the whole thing fits into an afternoon without eating the rest of your day.
The itinerary is a guideline, not a script. The captain decides whether to depart from Monterosso or Riomaggiore based on which gives the best access to all five villages that morning, and the swimming stop moves with the sea state. That flexibility is what keeps the experience safe and the water clear—no fixed schedule fighting the weather.

Can I snorkel if I've never done it before?
Yes. The snorkeling equipment is included and the guide stays in the water with you, so you're not alone. The captain picks a calm, shallow spot, usually near Guvano beach, where the seafloor is close enough to see clearly without going deep.
What exactly is the aperitivo on the boat?
Local delicacies, white wine, prosecco and beer for adults over 18; soda and snacks for everyone else. It's served while you're on the water between villages, so you're eating and drinking in the middle of the Cinque Terre coastline.
Does the boat stop at each village so I can walk around?
No. You see all five villages from the water—their facades, their harbors, the way they sit on the cliffs—but the boat doesn't dock at each one. The snorkeling stop and the aperitivo happen in between, and then you return to Levanto. The tour is about the coastline from the sea, not village exploration.
What if the sea is too rough to snorkel?
The captain chooses the snorkeling spot based on that morning's conditions, so the stop moves to wherever the water is calmest and clearest. If conditions are unsafe for water entry, the captain will decide—but the boat still goes out and you still see all five villages from the sea.
How long is the whole tour?
Three and a half hours from departure in Levanto to return. The boat leaves from Levanto, and the captain decides whether to return to Monterosso or Riomaggiore based on the day's conditions and which gives the best access to all five villages.
Is the guide English-speaking?
Yes. The guide and captain both speak English and Italian, so the stories about each village and the history of the Cinque Terre come through clearly.
