The Experience

We met Paolo just outside our hotel in Cagliari—he waved at us from the van, already grinning like we were old friends. I’d barely finished my espresso when he started talking about the flamingos at Su Giudeu salt lake. “If you’re lucky, they’ll be dancing today,” he joked. We actually did spot a few, their pink feathers almost glowing against the water. The air smelled faintly salty and sweet, kind of like sunscreen mixed with wild herbs.

Chia beach was our first stop. Paolo pointed out three different beaches we could reach in under ten minutes—Su Giudeu, Cala Cipolla, and the dune beach between them. I ended up wandering toward Cala Cipolla because it looked quieter. The sand felt warm but not scorching (I hate when it burns your feet), and there was this breeze that kept everything comfortable even though the sun was strong. Some local kids were chasing each other near the dunes; their laughter carried over the water.

Tuerredda was next—or Piscinnì if Tuerredda got too busy (which apparently happens a lot in summer). I tried snorkeling for the first time here. The water was so clear I could see little fish darting around Posidonia seagrass meadows—Paolo said it’s a sign of a healthy sea. I’m not exactly graceful with fins, but nobody seemed to care. There was this moment when I just floated on my back and stared at the sky—felt like time slowed down for a bit.

On the drive back along Costa del Sud, Paolo stopped at some panorama points—Capo Piscinì, Malfatano, Perda Longa. He insisted on taking photos of us (“for your mothers!”), which made everyone laugh. The light over the coastline was soft by then, almost golden. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
