The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the sand or the water — it was the sound of tires crunching over gravel as our Land Rover rolled out of Orosei. There’s this sharp scent of pine needles in the air, mixed with something salty and wild. Our guide, Paolo, waved at a shepherd on the roadside (they seemed to know each other — small town things), then grinned back at us like we were in on some secret. I’d read about the Biderosa Oasis but didn’t expect five coves so empty you could almost hear your own thoughts echo. The sand there is powdery and pale, and when I kicked off my shoes it felt cold at first, then warm underneath. We stopped by Sa Curcurica pond where Paolo pointed out herons standing so still they looked fake — he handed me his binoculars because I couldn’t spot the kingfisher (I never did see it; maybe next time).

The drive south got bumpier — more rocks, less chatter. At one point we passed through a tunnel of junipers that scratched the windows like impatient cats. The lighthouse at Capo Comino just appeared suddenly, not grand but kind of battered by wind and sun. We climbed up for photos (Paolo insisted on taking a group shot but my hair was everywhere). Down below, those white dunes looked almost unreal against all that blue water. I tried to pronounce “Isola Rossa” correctly — Paolo laughed and said I made it sound Spanish instead of Sardinian. He told us about old movies filmed here, though honestly all I could think about was how quiet it felt except for gulls arguing overhead.

We finished with a swim at Capo Comino beach — water so clear you could see tiny shells under your toes. One of those moments where you want to stay longer but know you can’t. On the way back to Orosei, everyone was sandy and tired in that good way after a real day outside. I still think about that view from the dunes; it sneaks up on me sometimes when I’m not expecting it.
