The Experience

The route starts in Orosei and climbs toward Orgosolo, a town of about 600 meters elevation on the slopes of Mount Lisorgoni, known across Barbagia for its traditions and the murals that cover its streets and squares. These paintings began as a protest tool and now tell the history and culture of Orgosolo and Sardinia from a perspective only art can hold. You travel by Land Rover, which is how the terrain around here gets crossed—the Supramonte is impervious and wild, the kind of landscape that kept bandits and shepherds hidden for centuries.

The day moves through stops that layer the region's depth. A visit to one of Barbagia's largest and best-preserved Giants' Tombs opens a window to the Nuragic civilization that lived here 3500 years ago. After passing the pastures of Pratobello, a short walk brings you to the limestone heels of Monte Novo San Giovanni at 1316 meters, where the landscape opens enough that you might spot a wild cat, a Bonelli eagle or a peregrine falcon. The guide knows what to look for and when.

Lunch happens in "Su Pinnetu," an ancient traditional sheepfold surrounded by millenary holm oaks, where a shepherd and his family cook the meal. This is not a restaurant—it is their home and their work. They prepare boiled sheep and roast suckling pig (su porcheddu), served with Cannonau wine and filu 'e ferru, a Sardinian brandy, and finish with pecorino cheese made from their own flock. The cost of lunch is €35 per person, paid on the spot. Private transportation is included; the guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language.
