The experience

The tour departs from the Red Coral stand in Castro with a briefing before boarding. You sail north along the Adriatic coast, passing steep cliffs and small coves as the boat approaches Grotta Zinzulusa, famous for its stalactites and stalagmites that resemble hanging rags. The name comes from the Italian word "zinzuli." The cave opens directly onto clear water, and the boat circles close enough to see the rock formations and the way light plays across the interior. Next is Grotta Romanelli, an archaeological site with evidence of Paleolithic settlement, its entrance framed by sea and cliff. The Palombara and Azzurra caves appear along the route as well, their rock shapes and natural light effects visible from the water.

The swim stop at Porto Miggiano Bay is the second half of the tour. The water is shallow and turquoise, the seabed visible below, and the cliffs rise steeply on three sides. You have time to swim or float in the bay before the boat returns to Castro. The whole experience runs about two hours from start to finish.
