The experience
You start at the Concentration Camp of Bolzano itself, one of only four concentration camps in Italy and the only one linked to forced labor operations. From summer 1944 until April 1945, roughly 11,000 people (men, women and children) were held prisoner here. The guide walks you through the site and its walls, explaining the camp's role in the broader Nazi apparatus and what daily life meant for those confined there.
From the camp, you move to the rail track called Die Transporte, where 13 wagons loaded with prisoners departed for trans-alpine camps at Dachau, Mauthausen, Flossenbürg, Ravensbrück and Auschwitz. The next stop is the Jewish cemetery, where you visit the memorial dedicated to the 96 Jewish South Tyrolean residents deported and killed in the local camp. Before heading into the city center, the guide shows you the forced labor memorial beside the Virgolo Gallery, once a ball-bearing factory where camp prisoners were forced to work.
The final part is a walking tour through Bolzano's medieval historical center, where the guide points out Stolpersteine: small brass plaques set into the pavement, each inscribed with the name and life dates of a Jewish resident murdered in Nazi persecution. You'll learn how Bolzano became a privileged trade center on the Augsburg-Venice route and how a Jewish community established itself here as early as the 14th century, playing crucial roles as bankers, merchants and mediators through the Middle Ages. The tour ends in front of Café Mozart.
