The Experience

"You walk here and you're standing where Akragas was the richest city in all of Magna Graecia," our guide said, pointing across the limestone plateau. That's the thing about the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento — it's not a single monument you tick off. It's a sprawl of seven Doric temples, some nearly intact, others reduced to columns and stone drums, spread across what was once the heart of ancient Sicily. The archaeological park itself is the largest in the world, and most people come for exactly what you'd expect: those temples, built between the 6th and 5th centuries BC when Akragas was powerful enough to rival Athens. They're among the best-preserved ancient Greek temples outside Greece itself, which is why UNESCO locked them in as a World Heritage Site back in 1997.

Your ticket gets you into the whole park, and you move through it at your own pace. There's no guide included, no group, no set route — you decide how long to stand in front of the Temple of Concordia or whether you want to walk the full perimeter to see the defensive walls and house foundations scattered across the site. The landscape is open and exposed, so bring water and a hat; there's not much shade once you're away from the entrance. The park sits on a ridge, so you're doing some walking and a bit of climbing between the different temple clusters, which is why they mention you should have moderate fitness. It's not strenuous, but it's not flat either.

One thing that trips people up: your confirmation voucher has to be printed before you arrive. The museum sends it by email, and you pick up your actual ticket at the bookshop at the rest stop on Piazzale Hardcastle — not at the main entrance. The voucher from the booking confirmation is the only one they'll accept, so if you don't have it in hand, you won't get in. It sounds like a hassle, but it takes five minutes once you're there. Only full tickets are available online; there's no reduced rate option through this booking.
