The experience

The Valley of the Temples is the largest archaeological site in the world at 1,300 hectares, though the name misleads: it sits on a ridge outside Agrigento, not in a valley. Your guide leads you through the well-preserved Doric temples that made Akragas, as the ancient Greeks called it, what one classical writer called "the most beautiful city of mortals." You'll walk the grounds at your own pace, stopping at each temple to examine its columns, altars and remaining structures while learning what each one was built for and who worshipped there.

The Temple of Concordia is one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples anywhere, its columns and symmetry still intact after millennia. The Temple of Hera sits perched on the ridge with sweeping views across the Valley. You'll see the altar where sacrifices once took place. The Temple of Heracles is the oldest in the site, its sturdy columns a reminder of the hero it honored. The Temple of Olympian Zeus, now mostly fallen columns, was once the largest: built at a scale meant to impress, with colossal statues and a design that spoke to the ambition of the city that raised it. Between the temples, you take in panoramic views of the Sicilian countryside and the landscape that shaped this classical civilization.

The tour includes entrance tickets to the archaeological park and the services of a licensed local guide. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sunscreen. The site is exposed and you'll be walking for the full two hours. The guide is available in English, Spanish, Italian, French or German, and can arrange radio guides if the group size requires them. If weather makes the tour unsafe, you receive a full refund.
