The experience
You're picked up from your Killarney hotel in a new luxury van and driven by Joe, a local qualified guide who knows the Ring of Kerry well enough to show you what the tour buses skip. The route follows the coastal loop south and west, stopping at the places that matter: Kerry Cliffs first, where a short walk takes you past ponies and llamas in a field to cliffs with a safety fence and views out to the Skellig Islands. Two great rocks rising from the sea. The cliffs are a haven for nesting seabirds, especially early in the year. Entry to the cliffs is €6 per person.
The tour includes a stop in Sneem village for refreshments and cake or local ice cream, then passes through Caherciveen, birthplace of Daniel O'Connell, where you see the only church in Ireland not dedicated to a saint. At the Bog Village you walk through famine cottages from the 1930s, feed the Irish Wolfhounds, among the world's largest dogs, and watch a world champion shepherd work his Border Collies in a herding demonstration. Lunch happens in the fishing village of Portmagee. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.
The van seats up to seven passengers depending on which option you book. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport to or from your accommodation. The tour runs 7 to 9 hours and is suitable for all fitness levels. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available. Service animals are welcome.
