The experience

We met our guide just outside Eyre Square. He waved, grinning, like he’d known us for ages. The square was busy but not rushed. Teenagers sprawled on the grass and someone played guitar nearby. Our guide pointed at the JFK memorial and told us about Kennedy’s visit: apparently half the city squeezed in to hear him. I tried to picture it and just ended up staring at the old trees swaying above all the chatter.

Lynch’s Castle looked almost too solid to be real, with its carved gargoyles watching everyone pass. I ran my hand along the cold limestone (probably not allowed, but no one minded) while our guide explained how the Lynches were one of Galway’s “tribes.” The word made me smile. It sounds so dramatic for a banking family. We ducked into St. Nicholas’ Church next. It smelled faintly of wax and old wood, and sunlight came in through dusty windows. There was a quiet there that stuck with me.

Kirwan’s Lane twisted away from the main street: suddenly everything felt closer together, voices bouncing between stone walls. We stopped at Thomas Dillon’s shop where they still make Claddagh rings. Li laughed when I tried to say “Claddagh” properly. I definitely butchered it. At the Hall of the Red Earl ruins, our guide let us linger. You could almost feel how many feet had passed over those stones since the 1200s.

The Spanish Arch was smaller than I expected but full of life: kids climbing, someone sketching by the river. Then we wandered into Galway’s Westend, which honestly felt like another city: bright murals, music from an open window, people waving at each other across café tables. It was drizzling by then but nobody seemed to mind. Locals just pulled their hoods up and kept talking. We finished near Galway Cathedral: the dome rising grey-green against a sky that couldn’t decide if it wanted to rain or not. I still think about that moment standing by the river as bells echoed out over everything.
