The experience
The tour starts at the Hardiman Hotel in Eyre Square, where your guide gives a brief overview of Galway's rich history before moving through the main square to see the John F Kennedy Memorial, the Browne Doorway, and the Quin-centenary Fountain with its 14-Tribes banners. From there you head onto Williams-gate Street, passing the elegant Browne Thomas building and jewelers who specialize in Galway's Claddagh rings. If time allows, you'll stop at the Oscar Wilde statue, a 2004 gift from Estonia to Ireland.
The route takes you down Eglinton Street past the Franciscan Friary church, then to Courthouse Square, which once held two iconic courthouses. From a newly-constructed pedestrian bridge over the River Corrib, you pause to view the Galway Cathedral, Europe's newest stone cathedral. You'll pass Bowling Green, where Nora Barnacle (who famously dated James Joyce on June 16, 1904, now known as Bloomsday) once lived. Lynch's Castle, the finest surviving town-castle in Ireland, comes next, followed by Church Lane (once called "Dead Man's Lane") and St. Nicholas Church, the largest medieval church in continuous use in Ireland. Your guide explains the building's history and its connection to Christopher Columbus, who is said to have worshipped there in 1477 before his voyage of discovery. The tour continues through the Latin Quarter on High Street, where you pass the King's Head Pub and the famous Naughton House, then reaches the Spanish Arch and Spanish Parade, the site of the old Galway port until 1840, where merchant ships once arrived from Spain with wines and spices.
The final stretch loops back to the Hall of the Red Earl, a Norman castle residence discovered by archaeologists in the late 1990s after being lost for centuries. You'll pass the Augustinian Abbey, established in 1500, and An Taibhdhearc, Ireland's only Irish-language theatre, founded in the early 1920s. The tour ends at the former Cathedral Building on Middle Street, which served for many centuries before being replaced by the new cathedral in 1957.
