The experience

The hike starts at Howth Market, where your guide meets you and leads the group along the harbour to spot seals and the old Abbey built by King Sitric the Viking. From there the path climbs steadily to Howth Head, where the views open across Dublin Bay, the Baily Lighthouse, and the islands of Ireland's Eye and Lambay. The guide shares local history and the stories that drew writers and artists to the village: the Game of Thrones connection at Howth Castle, the literary figures who lived here, and the tales that shaped the place.

The route crosses the heathlands toward Howth Summit, where wildflowers bloom in season and the panorama stretches north, south, east and west. You'll pass the Martello Tower, built to guard against Napoleon, and see the house where WB Yeats once lived. The cliff path itself runs famous for its views and the wildlife: seals, seabirds, and the open water below. The whole loop takes three hours at a steady pace, ending back at the village.
