The Experience

“If you see the seal today, give him a name,” our guide grinned as we shuffled off the train in Howth. I was still fumbling with my backpack straps and didn’t expect to start with laughter. The harbor was all salty tang and clatter — fishing boats, gulls arguing overhead, a few locals in wool hats nodding at us like they’d seen this group before. And yeah, there was the seal — just his head bobbing near the rocks. I called him ‘Patrick’ (our guide said that was too obvious), but he winked anyway.

The hike itself wasn’t what I pictured. We ducked into woods where the ground felt soft underfoot and the light kept changing — green one minute, then gold through leaves. At one point, Li (our guide) stopped by an old dolmen and told us about Ireland’s pirate queen. I tried to repeat her name in Irish; Li laughed so hard she nearly dropped her thermos. There were fairy houses tucked into tree roots (I almost missed them), and when we finally sat for our picnic, everything smelled like moss and someone’s strong cheese sandwich. Bring your own lunch — nobody shares here, not even fairies.

After that it got windy up on Muck Rock — you could see all of Dublin Bay stretched out below like a map someone crumpled and smoothed again. The cliffs were louder than I expected; wind whipped my hair into my mouth while Li pointed out the Baily Lighthouse far off in the haze. That part stuck with me — just standing there with strangers who suddenly felt less strange because we’d all climbed up together. The walk back wound along cliff edges and down towards Howth village again. My legs were tired but in that good way you only get after 11 km of moving and listening and laughing more than you thought you would.
