The experience

You're stepping down into the Burren limestone, 70 metres below ground, hard hat fitted and a guide ahead with a torch. The passage narrows in places (low enough that you notice the helmet), and every ten steps there's a landing where you can catch your breath and grip the handrail. The air shifts as you go deeper. It's cool, constant 11°C, the kind of cold that feels clean rather than harsh.
