Our host, Deirdre, handed me a menu and winked when she saw my confusion over “colcannon.” She said something in pure Cork accent — I caught about half of it — but her grin was contagious.

The show kicked off with a bang (literally, someone dropped a prop), and suddenly we were swept into centuries of Cork stories, jokes flying faster than I could keep up. The actors were locals — you could tell by the way they teased each other and slipped in little asides about the city. My partner nearly choked on his Baileys cheesecake during the bit about “speaking Cork.” The stew tasted like someone’s gran had made it, rich and peppery, and the salad had this sharp mustardy tang that surprised me. Kids at the next table got chocolate chip cookies bigger than their hands — one little girl tried to barter hers for more ice cream.

Between scenes, musicians played these wild jigs that made everyone’s feet tap under the tables.
