The Experience

We started out in Castlehaven, just a handful of us and our guide—can’t remember his name now, but he had that gentle West Cork humor. First stop was Jim Barry’s Cross. There was this moment where he asked if we’d ever thought about why places are called what they’re called. I hadn’t, honestly. He pointed at the sign and told us about the science behind Irish placenames—how they hold onto old stories like stubborn moss on a stone wall. The air smelled faintly salty even here, miles from the open sea.

After that we left the road for a muddy path (I was glad for the hiking pole they handed me). The grass was still wet from last night’s rain. At Legach, right on the edge of the ocean, our guide told us how farmers used to drag seaweed up these cliffs for their potatoes. I tried to picture it—horses slipping on wet rocks, everyone shouting in Irish or maybe just cursing at the weather. The wind picked up and someone laughed because their hair whipped straight into their tea.

Sandy Cove beach came next. It’s quieter than you’d think—a few gulls arguing overhead, nothing else. We heard about how locals used horses and donkeys to haul sand up from here for their fields. I never realized farming could be so tied to the sea. Lunch was this spread of West Cork cheese and smoked fish from Union Hall; Celine’s brown bread disappeared fast (I might’ve had thirds). There was coffee too, poured from a battered flask that steamed in the chill air.

I keep thinking about those names—Carrig na Saighneoirí, Beann tSídháin—and how they carry all these old lives forward into now. You walk away feeling like you’ve borrowed someone else’s memories for an afternoon. I didn’t expect that part.
