Explore Galway coast and Cliffs of Moher

  • Hotel pick-up in Galway
  • Visit Dunguaire Castle
  • Drive along Wild Atlantic Way
  • Explore Cliffs of Moher

The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Galway hotel and heads south along the coast. Dunguaire Castle, a 16th-century tower house on Galway Bay near Kinvara, is your first stop: a restored landmark with sweeping views and a photo-worthy silhouette. From there, the route follows the Wild Atlantic Way, a winding coastal drive that passes sandy beaches, stone walls and small villages, each bend opening onto new views of the Atlantic.

The Cliffs of Moher are the centerpiece: 214 metres of limestone rising straight from the water, stretching eight kilometres along County Clare's edge. You'll have time to walk the cliff paths, take photos of the Aran Islands and Galway Bay in the distance, and feel the Atlantic wind. The visitor centre sits at the top, though entry tickets are purchased separately on the day. On the half-day tour, this is where the route ends and you return to Galway. On the full-day option, you continue inland to explore more: Poulnabrone Dolmen, a 5,000-year-old portal tomb rising from the rocky Burren landscape; the colourful village of Doolin, known for traditional music pubs and a small harbour; Lahinch, a seaside town with a long beach and a laid-back surf atmosphere; and the otherworldly terrain of Burren National Park, where limestone pavement and wildflowers dominate the landscape.

Your own professional driver handles all the navigation and stops, and the air-conditioned vehicle includes bottled water and WiFi. The pace is built around photo stops and time to walk at each site, so you're not rushed through the day. Children in prams or strollers are welcome, and the vehicle has specialized infant seats available.

Top questions

What is Poulnabrone Dolmen and why is it worth seeing on the full-day tour?

Poulnabrone Dolmen is a 5,000-year-old portal tomb in County Clare, built by Neolithic farmers as a burial site. Its massive limestone slabs rise from the rocky Burren landscape and look like a giant's table, surrounded by wildflowers. It's one of Ireland's most striking prehistoric monuments and a window into the country's ancient history.

How much time do you actually spend at the Cliffs of Moher itself?

The itinerary includes dedicated time at the cliffs for walking the cliff paths and taking photos, though the exact duration depends on the pace of earlier stops. The cliffs stretch eight kilometres along the coast, so there's room to explore at your own speed once you arrive.

Do I need to buy tickets for the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre in advance?

Entry tickets for the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre are not included in the tour and can be purchased on the day of your visit at the ticket office on site. You can decide whether to enter the centre once you arrive.

What's the difference between the half-day and full-day options?

The half-day tour (five hours) covers Dunguaire Castle, the Wild Atlantic Way drive, and the Cliffs of Moher before returning to Galway. The full-day tour (eight hours) adds Poulnabrone Dolmen, the villages of Doolin and Lahinch, and time to explore Burren National Park's limestone landscape.
