The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the wind — not cold exactly, but sharp enough to wake you up as we stepped out at Dunguaire Castle. Our guide, Tomás, had this way of telling stories that made the castle’s old stones feel alive (he joked about ghosts, but honestly, it felt possible). You could smell the sea even before you saw it. We’d barely left Galway and already I was glad I’d brought a rain jacket, just in case. The bus was comfortable though — I almost dozed off watching Kinvara’s boats bobbing around.
Hazel Mountain Chocolates was a surprise. I’m not usually one for sweets before noon, but the cocoa smell hit me right away and suddenly I’m tasting dark chocolate with sea salt while a woman named Siobhán explained how they roast beans right there. She laughed when my friend tried to pronounce “Burren” the Irish way — we didn’t quite nail it. Driving through those grey hills after, the landscape looked almost lunar. There’s something about that stony quiet that makes you want to whisper.
Lunch in Doolin was lively — lots of chatter and clatter in the hotel dining room, everyone swapping stories about what they’d seen so far. Then came the main event: our two hours at the Cliffs of Moher. It’s hard to describe how big it feels up there. Gulls wheeled below us and the Atlantic crashed so loud you had to shout sometimes. I just stood there for a while letting my hands get cold on the railing — didn’t want to leave yet. On the way back, Tomás pointed out Lisdoonvarna and joked about matchmaking (I pretended not to look interested), then we caught a glimpse of Black Head lighthouse before heading home. Still think about that salty air sometimes.
