Swim alongside manta rays in waters where they gather to feed

Snorkeling with manta rays in Nusa Lembongan is a 2-hour activity in Indonesia's Bali region where you enter the water with snorkeling equipment to encounter manta rays and reef fish in one of three to four sites chosen by weather and sea conditions. An English-speaking guide leads the activity; all equipment is provided. No prior experience or special skills are required.

The Experience

The guide takes you to one of several snorkeling spots depending on the day's conditions — Manta Bay, Crystal Bay Beach, Gamat Bay or Wall Point — each chosen to avoid strong currents or rough waves. You enter the water with full snorkeling gear and spend the 2 hours in the underwater landscape, watching for manta rays that move through these bays to feed. The reef itself holds an abundance of smaller fish and coral structure, so there is always something to see even when the rays are not immediately visible.

Manta rays are the largest rays in the ocean, and seeing one underwater is a different experience from any photograph. They move with a kind of grace that makes the encounter memorable. The guide stays with the group and can point out what is happening below the surface — how the rays feed, where to position yourself to watch without disturbing them, what other species are moving through the same water. Because conditions change daily, the operator picks the safest and most productive site each morning, which is why the exact location is not fixed in advance.

All snorkeling equipment is included: mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuit if needed. You do not need to bring your own or arrange anything before arrival. The activity suits swimmers of any fitness level, though it does require comfort in the water and the ability to float and breathe through a snorkel for the full 2 hours.

Top questions

What are the chances of actually seeing manta rays when I go snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan?

Manta rays gather in these bays to feed, especially in certain seasons, but sightings are not guaranteed on every departure. The guide chooses between three to four different sites based on weather and sea conditions that day, moving to whichever location offers the best conditions for encounters. Even if rays are not present, the reef fish and coral make the snorkeling worthwhile.

Do I need to know how to dive or have any special training?

No diving certification or special skills are required. Snorkeling is simpler than diving — you stay at the surface, breathe through the snorkel, and use fins to move through the water. The activity suits all fitness levels as long as you are comfortable swimming and floating.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day I book?

The guide checks conditions each morning and picks one of the four snorkeling sites based on waves and currents that day. If conditions are unsafe for snorkeling, the operator will reschedule your activity or offer an alternative — confirm the operator's policy when you book.

Is the snorkeling equipment included, or do I need to bring my own?

All snorkeling equipment is included: mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuit if you need one. You do not need to arrange or bring anything.

How long is the snorkeling activity, and what time does it start?

The activity lasts 2 hours. Confirm the start time and pickup details with the operator when you book, as these may vary depending on tides and weather.
