The experience

The tour starts at Lapangan Merdeka, Medan's old central square, where the colonial grid still holds. Along Kesawan square stand the Lonsum building (1911), the offices of the Netherlands Indian Trading Bank and Trading Company (1920s), the town hall (1908), Bank Indonesia (1907), Hotel Dharma Deli (1898) and the post office (1911): each one a marker of the city's shift from sultanate to Dutch rule to independence. The square is also known for cheap, good food, so the route leaves room to eat if you want to.

From there the driver takes you to Tjong A Fie's Mansion, a 35-room, two-storey house built in 1895 on 8,000 square meters and now a museum. The architecture blends Chinese, Malay and Art Deco styles, with rooms arranged around a central open-air courtyard, the "Well of Heaven", following feng-shui principles. Next is the Grand Mosque, built between 1906 and 1909 by the Sultan of Deli, with an octagonal layout and ornaments mixing Moroccan, European and Middle Eastern design. Maimun Palace, the royal residence built 1887–1891, shows the same layering: Malay heritage, Islamic and Indian architecture, with Spanish and Italian furniture. You can photograph yourself in traditional dress for an additional fee.

The temples round out the multicultural picture. Maha Vihara Maitreya is a Buddhist complex with three main buildings for worship and gatherings. Gunung Timur Temple, built in 1962, is the largest Chinese temple in the city. Sri Mariamman Temple in Kampung Keling (Medan's Little India) dates to 1884 and is the oldest Hindu temple. The Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni, a Catholic church finished in 2005, uses Indo-Mogul style. The eight-hour window covers all of these without rushing, though the exact pace depends on how long you spend at each stop.

What's inside Tjong A Fie's Mansion that makes it worth a stop?

Tjong A Fie's Mansion is a 35-room museum built in 1895 that shows how Chinese merchants lived during the colonial period. The rooms surround a central courtyard designed by feng-shui principles, and the architecture mixes Chinese, Malay and Art Deco styles in ways you won't see in other colonial buildings in the city.

How old are the colonial buildings around Kesawan square?

Most of them date from the 1890s to 1920s. The oldest is Hotel Dharma Deli from 1898, and the newest are the trading company offices from the 1920s. They line the square and show how Medan looked when it was the center of Dutch colonial trade in North Sumatra.

Does the tour include time to eat, or is it just sightseeing?

Kesawan square, where the tour starts, is known for cheap and good local food, so you can eat there if you want. The eight-hour duration gives you flexibility to spend time at the sites or grab a meal. The exact timing depends on how long you stay at each stop.

Can I take photos at the Sultan's Palace in traditional dress?

Yes, you can photograph yourself in traditional dress at Maimun Palace, though this costs extra and is not included in the tour price.

What religions and cultures does the tour show?

The tour covers Islamic, Chinese, Hindu, Buddhist and Catholic sites. You visit the Grand Mosque, Chinese temples, the oldest Hindu temple in Medan (Sri Mariamman, built 1884), a Buddhist monastery, and a Catholic church, so you see how different communities built their own landmarks in the same city.
