The experience

Lempuyang Temple, known as the Gate of Heaven, sits on the peak of Mount Lempuyang at 1,175 meters above sea level in East Bali. The climb passes several smaller temples and grey long-tailed macaques in the cool mountain forest before reaching the main temple, where the famous gate frames views of Mount Agung and the landscape below. This is the opening stop on the tour and the most physically demanding part of the day.

After descending, the tour moves to two water palaces built by the last king of Karangasem in the mid-20th century. Tirta Gangga Water Palace, completed in 1948, blends Balinese and Chinese architecture across its gardens and pools. Taman Ujung Sukasada, the sister site, sits on the eastern shoreline with Mount Agung as its backdrop and was restored after damage from the 1963 volcanic eruption and a 1979 earthquake. Both palaces remain popular with locals and visitors for their historic structures and landscaping.

The afternoon includes lunch at a restaurant, then a stop at Virgin Beach, a 700-meter stretch of fine sand in a turquoise cove bordered by rocky cliffs and tropical forest. The final destination is Tenganan Village, a walled Bali Aga settlement laid out symmetrically and known for preserving pre-Hindu customs and traditional crafts. Your driver-guide handles the route and timing throughout the nine to ten hours, and the vehicle returns you to your Seminyak hotel at the end of the day.
