The Experience

You board a boat at Gili Trawangan and spend five hours moving between three islands, stopping to snorkel at the best reefs. The first stop is usually Turtle Point, where sea turtles feed in shallow water—you'll be in the water with them, not watching from above. The coral gardens come next: dense schools of tropical fish move through blue corals, and the visibility is clear enough that you see the bottom without effort.

Gili Meno holds the underwater sculptures, a series of statues on the seafloor that have become the most photographed spot in the Gilis. The guide brings an underwater camera and video setup, so you get footage of yourself in the water instead of just phone snapshots from the surface. A glass-bottom boat is part of the trip, which means you can see the reef without getting wet if you want a break. Lunch happens on the beach at Gili Meno or Gili Air—you choose which island, and the restaurant is a short walk from where the boat lands.

Each island has a different feel. Gili Trawangan is the busiest, with bars and shops along the beach. Gili Meno is quiet and built around the sculptures and the reef. Gili Air sits between them: local, laid-back, fewer tourists. The snorkeling itself is the same quality at all three, but the islands give you a sense of the range of what the Gilis offer in a single trip.
