Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Mount Batur trek and hot spring

  • Trek Mount Batur early morning
  • Watch sunrise at summit
  • Visit volcanic crater
  • Enjoy breakfast at summit
  • Soak in natural hot spring

I didn’t think I’d actually make it out of bed at 2 AM, but there I was, shuffling into the van with my eyes barely open. Our driver (I think his name was Wayan?) handed me bottled water and grinned like he’d done this a thousand times. The road from Ubud to Mount Batur felt endless in the dark, just headlights and the occasional dog darting across. But honestly, there’s something weirdly peaceful about being awake when almost nobody else is.

The trek itself—yeah, it’s not a stroll. The ground was loose and a bit slippery in spots, and I kept thinking my legs would give out before we reached the top. Our guide kept checking on us, sometimes pointing out little things I’d never have noticed: warm air rising from cracks in the earth, or the way you could smell sulfur if you stopped breathing so hard. When we finally made it to the summit (just as that first orange line cracked over the horizon), everyone went quiet for a minute. Breakfast was simple—eggs cooked by steam from the volcano, bread that tasted better than anything at home, probably because I was starving. I still think about that view sometimes.

Afterward, we headed down—my knees were jelly—and drove straight to these natural hot springs close to where we started. Steam everywhere, water just hot enough to make you forget how cold your hands were on the mountain. Locals were already there, laughing and chatting in Bahasa; one woman offered me some kind of sweet rice snack (no idea what it was called). I tried to thank her in Indonesian and she laughed—pretty sure I butchered it.
