The Experience

Hands gripping a tiny ceramic cup, I watched steam curl up into the green air — jungle all around, birds somewhere above. Our guide Wayan grinned as he explained how Balinese coffee is roasted by hand, the beans turning glossy over a wood fire. I didn’t expect to smell so much — smoky, sweet, almost chocolatey. We’d just arrived at this little farm outside Ubud after a bumpy drive (free pickup, thankfully), and already I felt like I’d wandered into someone’s backyard rather than a “tour.” The kopi luwak was there too, but honestly, I skipped it — not just because you have to pay extra, but because the regular stuff tasted rich enough for me.

After we tried maybe six or seven teas (the ginger one still tingles in my nose), we followed Wayan down a narrow path through the trees. Suddenly it opened onto rice fields — bright green, water shining everywhere. There was a bar set up right in the middle of it all, where locals sat talking and laughing. A farmer named Pak Made waved us over; he was already halfway up a coconut tree before I could say hello. Watching him tap the sap for Bali coconut wine looked way harder than he made it seem. He poured us each a glass — cloudy, cold, kind of tangy-sweet. Li laughed when I tried to say “tuak” in Bahasa Indonesia — probably butchered it.

I liked that nothing felt rushed or staged on this day trip from Ubud to the jungle and rice paddies. People actually stopped to chat with us about their work (and their favorite snacks). The air smelled like wet earth and wood smoke most of the time; my shoes got muddy but nobody cared. On the ride back I kept thinking about that first sip of coconut wine under the open sky — something about it sticks with you longer than you’d think.
