The experience

The tour starts with a pickup from Minangkabau International Airport and a drive to Bukittinggi, stopping at Taruko Caffe for coffee and views over the landscape. On the way you may spot the Rafflesia Arnoldi flower, which blooms for only seven days at a time. The second day takes you to Harau Valley, a karstic landscape of steep cliffs and waterfalls where rock climbing is popular. You'll pass through traditional Minangkabau villages and stop at Ibuh Traditional Market. The third day is built around Batusangkar and includes Pagaruyung Palace, where you can see the household tools, cooking stoves and traditional wedding dress of the Minangkabau people. If your arrival falls on a Saturday, the itinerary can include the Pacu Jawi bull race, which runs from 10am to 5pm. You also visit Pariangan, recognized by Budget Travel magazine in 2012 as one of the five most beautiful villages in the world, where you can walk through terraced rice fields and explore the ancient mosque and communal buildings.

The final two days return you to Padang. One night is spent at Rimba Echolodge, a secluded property where you can snorkel and, if fortunate, encounter sea turtles. On the way back to the airport, you may visit one or two islands depending on time. Your private driver and guide handle all transportation and logistics throughout. Parking fees are covered. The tour is built for small groups or solo travelers who want a dedicated guide rather than joining a shared departure.

The Pacu Jawi is a traditional bull race held in Batusangkar every Saturday from 10am to 5pm. It is only available on Saturdays, so your arrival date needs to align with the weekend for this stop to be included in your itinerary.

Will I have time to snorkel and see sea turtles at Rimba Echolodge?

Rimba Echolodge is where you spend your final night before the airport drop-off. Snorkeling is available there, and sea turtles are sometimes spotted, though sightings are not guaranteed. The operator notes that staying more than one night gives you better odds of a full experience.
