The experience

How do you actually get into the Mentawai rainforest and stay there? You board a local ferry from Muaro Port in Padang early in the morning, ride for around five hours across to South Siberut (with a short stop at Sikabaluan), then repack your bag into waterproof containers and travel by wooden canoe up a jungle river before walking on foot to your first Uma. A traditional Uma is a communal house where a Mentawai family and their Sikerei (spiritual healer) live together. You stay inside it, sleep there, eat there, and spend the next two days doing what the family does: preparing sago, making bark cloth, learning about traditional medicine and forest knowledge, hearing stories about Mentawai customs and tattoo practices. There is no schedule imposed on you. You join the rhythms of the household.

On day four, you pack up again, trek back to the river, board a motorized canoe, and travel deeper into the rainforest to a second Uma with a different family. You meet them at lunch, spend the afternoon with the Sikerei and community members, and stay the night. The next morning, a short trek takes you back to the river, a boat ride to Muntei Village, lunch, and then the afternoon ferry back to Padang. The whole journey (ferry, canoe, trekking, two Uma stays) is arranged for you. Your English-speaking guide is with you throughout.

This is not a lodge tour with scheduled activities. You are living inside a family's home in the rainforest, and the days move at their pace. The physical demand comes from jungle trekking with a pack, river travel in open boats, and the simple conditions of a communal house with no electricity or running water. Travelers should have moderate fitness and be comfortable with heat, humidity, and basic accommodation.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is a traditional Mentawai Uma, and what is it like to sleep in one?

A traditional Uma is a communal longhouse where a Mentawai family, including the Sikerei (spiritual healer), lives together. You sleep inside the Uma on a mat or simple bed, share meals with the family, and have access to basic washing facilities. There is no electricity or modern plumbing. The Uma is built from wood and thatch and sits deep in the rainforest.

How long is the ferry ride from Padang to Siberut, and what happens on the first day?

The ferry from Muaro Port in Padang takes around five hours, with a short transit stop at Sikabaluan. You arrive in Muntei Village, repack your belongings into waterproof bags, travel by wooden canoe up a jungle river, then trek on foot to your first Uma, where you meet your host family and Sikerei and have dinner together.

What kind of activities do you do while staying with a Mentawai family?

You join the family's daily life: preparing sago, making bark cloth, learning about traditional medicine and forest knowledge, and hearing stories about Mentawai customs and tattoo practices. The activities depend on what the family is doing that day. You participate alongside them rather than following a set schedule.

Do you stay with the same family for all four nights, or do you move to a different Uma?

You stay with two different Mentawai families. You spend two nights with your first host family, then on day four you trek back to the river, travel by motorized canoe deeper into the rainforest, and stay one night with a second family before returning to Padang on day five.

What is included in the tour price, and what should I bring?

Ferry tickets between Padang and Siberut, all boat and canoe transport, accommodation in both Uma houses, jungle trekking, an English-speaking local guide, and local team assistance are included. You should bring waterproof bags for your belongings, sturdy hiking shoes, lightweight clothing for heat and humidity, sun protection, and any personal medications. Snacks and drinks are not included.
