The experience

You arrive in Agra having skipped the queue that forms at the Taj Mahal entrance. The operator provides your ticket and a live guide who speaks English, Spanish, French, Hindi or one additional language. The guide walks you through the mausoleum itself, explaining the building's story and pointing out optical illusions in the marble work. After the main structure, you see a demonstration of the inlay technique (the intricate stone-setting that decorates the walls), and learn about the artisans whose descendants still practice the craft today.

The tour runs three hours at minimum if you visit only the Taj Mahal, or stretches to a full day if you add the other monuments. Agra Fort, built of red sandstone, shows the Mughal emperors' palace and defensive walls. Itmad-ud-Daulah, smaller and less crowded than the Taj, displays white marble with similar inlay work on a more intimate scale. Mehtab Bagh sits across the Yamuna River and offers a view of the Taj Mahal from the opposite bank: the angle most photographers seek. You choose which sites to include when you book.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included in most options. One option covers the guide and entry ticket only, leaving you to arrange your own transport.
