The Experience

“You know, Shah Jahan wanted to build a black Taj across the river,” our guide said, squinting at the Yamuna’s slow shimmer. I’d just stepped onto the cool marble of the Taj Mahal, shoes wrapped in thin cloth covers. There was this faint smell—almost like wet stone mixed with rosewater. The crowds were already gathering but somehow it felt quiet, maybe because everyone was whispering or just staring up. Our guide pointed out tiny details in the inlay work; I tried to take a photo but gave up and just stood there for a minute. It’s strange how something so famous can still surprise you.

The drive from Delhi had started before sunrise—our driver handed me a bottle of water and grinned when I asked if he ever gets tired of this route (he doesn’t). We stopped once for chai at a roadside stand, which tasted sweet and smoky. By the time we reached Agra Fort, the sun was higher and everything glowed red. Walking through those old courtyards, our guide told stories about emperors plotting and poets getting exiled. I leaned against one of the sandstone walls—warm from the sun—and tried to picture it full of horses and noise. You can see the Taj from one of the balconies; it looks almost unreal from that distance.

Lunch was at a hotel with cold air conditioning (thank god), proper tablecloths, and food that actually tasted homemade—especially the dal, which I’m still thinking about days later. After eating too much naan, we visited Itimad-ud-Daulah—the “Baby Taj.” It’s smaller but somehow more delicate, with birds hopping around in the gardens and hardly any crowds. Our guide explained how its design inspired the big one; I tried to repeat its real name but mangled it pretty badly (he laughed). On the way back to Delhi, I kept looking out at fields rolling by and felt oddly calm—like I’d seen something important but couldn’t quite put it into words.
