The experience

The tuk-tuk picks you up at the cruise terminal and takes 30 minutes to reach Fort Kochi. From there, the tour moves through the old quarter on foot and by vehicle, stopping at the Chinese fishing nets: large mechanical structures at least 10 meters high, operated by teams of fishermen using counterweights and ropes to lower nets into the sea. You'll see the Dutch Cemetery, consecrated in 1724 and maintained by the Church of South India, which holds the graves of colonial-era voyagers. The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, one of eight basilicas in India, stands as one of the most impressive cathedrals in the country, founded in 1505 on the feast day of the Invention of the Holy Cross.

St. Francis Church, built by the Portuguese in 1510, was the first European church constructed in India and once held the remains of explorer Vasco da Gama. The Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town dates back to 1568, the oldest in the Commonwealth, built on land donated by the Kochi ruler and home to rare antiques. You'll walk through the spice markets with their traditional buildings and lingering aromas, then visit Mattancherry Palace, also called the Dutch Palace, a two-story structure built by the Portuguese in 1545 and later repaired by the Dutch, decorated with a collection of murals showing Keralan architecture with colonial influences.

After the tour, the driver takes you back to the cruise port in another 30 minutes. The Chinese fishing nets, locally called Cheena Vala, are fixed mechanical installations on the shore where teams of up to six fishermen operate large cantilever nets suspended over the sea. Counterweights made of big stones hang from ropes on the opposite end, allowing the fishermen to lower and raise the nets: an unusual form of shore-operated fishing found mostly around Kochi.
