The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and moves through Shimla's central landmarks in a private car. Jakhu Temple, dedicated to the Hindu deity Hanuman, sits on a hilltop and dates back centuries. The guide explains its mythology and significance to the town. From there you head to the Ridge, the pedestrian promenade that runs along Mall Road where vehicles are banned and hundreds of visitors gather for sunset views. The Ridge connects most of Shimla's major sites and gives you a sense of how the city is laid out.

Christ Church, the second oldest church in North India, stands on the Ridge in neo-gothic style and was consecrated after 1857. Nearby is the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, a Victorian Gothic theatre opened in 1887 and designed by architect Henry Irwin. It hosted the British community's theatrical and cultural events and remains a government building after recent restoration. Vice Regal Lodge, also designed by Irwin in Jacobethan style, was the residence of British Viceroy Lord Dufferin and sits on Observatory Hills. Kali Bari Temple, built in 1845 on Jakhu Hill, is one of Shimla's oldest temples and is dedicated to Goddess Kali, locally known as Shyamala: the name from which Shimla itself is said to have come.

The tour also includes Annandale, a circular open ground that was a British playground before independence and now hosts parades, army activities and festivals. It holds an Indian Army Museum and a Cactus museum, and the surrounding views are part of why it remains a central destination for visitors exploring the city.
