You're picked up at your hotel at 9 a.m., and the car stays at your disposal for the full 8 hours. This is not a fixed itinerary where you follow a group through predetermined stops. Khajuraho was built over roughly a century starting around 950 AD by the Chandela kings, who constructed about 85 temples across 21 square kilometers. Of those, roughly 20 remain well preserved, built from hard river sandstone and carved inside and out with intricate sculptures: many sensual, some sexually explicit. The temples divide into three complexes. The western group is the largest and most visited.

The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple anchors the western complex: a 31-meter-high Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, layered with porches and turrets that culminate in a central spire. It's considered one of the best-preserved examples of medieval temple architecture in India. Your guide can spend as much time here as you want, or move on to other temples in the western group, or head to the eastern complex. The choice is yours. The guide speaks your language and knows the site well enough to answer questions as they come up, not just recite a script.
