Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Tea plantation walk and sunset view

  • Start at Munnar info office
  • Walk 1.5 to 2 hours through spice farm and tea gardens
  • Watch sunset at Chithirapuram viewpoint

“Don’t rush here — the tea grows slow, so should we,” our guide Rajesh said as we left the little Munnar Info office behind. He had this gentle way of pausing every few minutes, letting us catch up or just look around. The first thing I noticed was how the air smelled — like fresh leaves and something sweet I couldn’t name. We passed a woman in a red scarf tending to pepper vines; she smiled but didn’t stop working. The path felt soft under my shoes, almost spongy from last night’s rain.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a tea plantation walk in Munnar, but Rajesh kept pointing out odd shapes in the bushes (“That one looks like an elephant, right?”) and telling us about his grandmother’s chai recipe. There were stretches where nobody talked — just birds calling somewhere above us and that weirdly comforting sound of our own footsteps. At one point, I tried to say “Chithirapuram” properly; Rajesh grinned and said I was close enough for a city person.

The last part of the trek climbs up towards Chithirapuram viewpoint. It’s not steep but my legs felt it anyway (I probably should’ve worn better socks). We reached the top just as the sun started dropping behind rows of green — gold light catching on every leaf. Someone handed me a bottle of water and for a second everything went quiet except for wind moving through the plants. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home. We lingered longer than planned because nobody wanted to leave yet…
