The experience

Munnar sits in Kerala's high country at over 6,000 feet, ringed by tea plantations and cut through by mountain roads that wind between the estates. This tour packs five or six hours of stops into one morning, starting at Nyamkkad Waterfalls where the sound of cascading water carries through the mist, then climbing to Eravikulam National Park on Rajamala Hills to look for the Nilgiri Tahr, a rare mountain goat found nowhere else in India. The park spreads across 97 square kilometres and sits far enough from the main hill station to stay quiet.

From there the route drops to Lakkam Waterfalls, which originates from a plateau rather than a hillside. An unusual feature that lets the water collect into a pool surrounded by dense forest and boulders. The tour includes stops at tea and coffee plantations near Chattamunnar where you can see how the crops grow on the steep slopes, and a viewpoint at Vaguvarai for photographs across the plantation valleys. If you want to extend the day, the sandalwood forests of Marayoor lie about 40 kilometres away on the eastern side of the Western Ghats, where a government-run sandalwood factory operates and wild deer move through the sanctuary.

You choose your transport at checkout: a private car for up to six passengers, a car for up to four, or a rickshaw for up to three. The driver doubles as your guide and speaks English. Pickup from your hotel costs extra only if you stay more than five kilometres from the meeting point (Rijo Villa). Anything beyond that distance requires a call to confirm the fee. Luggage storage and rest rooms are free at the office while you're out.
