The Experience
The tuk-tuk picks you up at the cruise terminal and heads straight into Fort Kochi, starting at the Chinese fishing nets along the Arabian Sea. These aren't museum pieces: teams of up to six fishermen still operate the massive mechanical structures—nets suspended 20 meters across, held up by counterweights of stone. You watch them work, then move inland to the Dutch Cemetery, consecrated in 1724, where the gravestones tell the story of colonial settlers who never went home.
From there the route moves through the churches that mark Kochi's European history. St. Francis Church, built in 1503, is one of the oldest European churches in India; Vasco da Gama was buried here after he died in Kochi in 1524, though his body was later moved to Lisbon. The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, one of Kerala's eight basilicas, stands nearby. The Indo-Portuguese Museum and the Mattancherry Palace (also called the Dutch Palace) show how the Portuguese and Dutch shaped the city's architecture and art, with Kerala murals depicting the Rajas of Kochi still visible on the palace walls.
The second half of the tour takes you into the neighborhoods where locals live and work. You stop at the spice warehouse to see how ginger and other spices are dried and packed, then visit women's cooperatives where they make spices and candles by hand. The Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568 and still active, sits in Jew Town among shops selling exotic spices in bulk. A Jain temple rounds out the stops. Bottled water is included; all entrance fees to the monuments are already paid, so you move through without waiting at ticket counters.

What exactly are the Chinese fishing nets and how do they work?
The Chinese fishing nets are stationary lift nets—huge mechanical structures with nets stretched 20 meters or more across, held up by counterweights of stone hanging from ropes. A team of fishermen operates each installation, which stands at least 10 meters high. They're still in active use along the Fort Kochi waterfront, so you'll see them working during the tour.
How long does this tuk-tuk tour take and what's included in the price?
The tour runs four to six hours and includes all monument entrance fees, bottled water, pickup from your cruise ship, and drop-off back at the cruise terminal. Your driver is an English-speaking local guide who can explain the history as you travel.
Will I see where spices are actually made and sold?
Yes. The tour stops at a ginger warehouse where spices are dried and packed, and at women's cooperatives where locals make spices and candles. You'll also visit spice markets in Jew Town where vendors sell exotic spices in bulk.
Is the tuk-tuk air-conditioned?
The tuk-tuk is not air-conditioned, but it's open-sided, which allows airflow as you move through the city. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need an alternative.
What's the difference between St. Francis Church and the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica?
St. Francis Church, built in 1503, is one of India's oldest European churches and has deep historical significance—Vasco da Gama was buried there after his death in Kochi in 1524. The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is one of Kerala's eight basilicas and is counted among the finest and most impressive churches in India. Both are stops on the tour.
Can infants come on this tour?
Yes, infants are welcome and can sit on an adult's lap. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels.
