Alleppey backwater boat cruise: choose your own hours
Narrow canals, a low bridge you duck under, temples and tea stalls along the Pampa River
A motorized shikara boat cruise through Kerala's Alleppey backwaters, departing from near Kannitta Jetty and covering routes through Vembanad Lake, multiple canals and the Pampa River. You choose the duration—from one hour to a full day—and the route expands with your time, so a short trip stays focused while a longer one reaches farther into village life. A live guide speaks English, Arabic, Hindi or Tamil. Safety jackets and bottled water are included; lunch and activities like Ayurvedic massage are optional paid stops.

The Experience
The boat leaves from near Kannitta Jetty on Vembanad Lake, India's largest lake, which spans three districts. A one-hour cruise takes you to Kainakary Terminal and back the same way; if you book longer, the route opens up—you move deeper into the backwaters, passing through narrower canals, past Bhajanadam Temple, along the Pampa River where a famous tea stall sits at the water's edge. The guide decides stops based on what you want to see and how much time you have left.
One detail changes the day: the Manalodi Canal has a bridge so low you cannot sit upright in your seat. When the boat passes under it, you crouch down on the floor. It is the kind of moment that makes the backwaters feel less like a sightseeing route and more like moving through someone else's everyday. Kainakary houseboat terminal is a floating bridge and a tourist stop, but it costs extra to visit; the guide will pass it by unless you want to pay. Punnamada Lake, famous for the Nehru Trophy boat race held each August, shows dozens of houseboats anchored there—a view that takes up the whole horizon.
Lunch and massage are both available but cost extra and add time to the cruise. A restaurant near the route serves Kerala-style food and lets you photograph eagles while you eat; an Ayurvedic massage centre can hold the boat for 45 minutes if you want one. Neither is included, so the choice is yours at the moment. The guide speaks English, Arabic, Hindi or Tamil, and you can use your own camera or drone during the cruise. Disposable rain coats are provided during monsoon season. Tours run between 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on most days, though Friday mornings between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. are not available due to temple worship time. Sunrise and sunset cruises operate at fixed times with no flexibility on departure.

Is this one for you?Book a longer cruise if you want to move beyond the main waterways into quieter canals and village stops—each extra hour opens a different part of the backwaters. Shorter cruises work if you have limited time or want to stay closer to the main jetty, and you can always add hours at booking or choose a sunrise or sunset departure if a specific time matters to you.

What is the Manalodi Canal bridge like, and do I have to go under it?
The Manalodi Canal has a very low bridge, and the boat passes directly under it. You cannot stay seated—you have to crouch down on the floor of the boat while it goes through because the bridge is so low and the canal so narrow. It is part of the route on longer cruises.
Can I stop for lunch during the cruise, and what does it cost?
A famous restaurant sits along the route, and you can stop there for up to an hour if you want lunch. You pay for the food yourself at the restaurant. While you eat, you can take photos with eagles that gather there. If you skip lunch, the boat keeps moving.
What happens if I book a one-hour cruise versus a four-hour one?
A one-hour cruise takes you from Kannitta Jetty to Kainakary Terminal and returns the same way. A four-hour cruise covers the same ground but continues much farther—through more canals, past temples, along the Pampa River, and into areas a shorter trip does not reach. The longer you book, the more of the backwaters you see.
Is Kainakary houseboat terminal included in the cruise?
Kainakary houseboat terminal is a floating bridge and a famous tourist stop, but visiting it costs extra. The boat will pass by it unless you pay the additional fee to stop there. If you do not pay, the guide continues the cruise without stopping.
What languages does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English, Arabic, Hindi, Tamil and one additional language. You can request your preferred language when you book.
Can I bring my own camera or drone on the cruise?
Yes, you can use your own camera or drone during the cruise if you have one. Bottled water and safety jackets are included, and disposable rain coats are provided during monsoon season.
