The experience
Your guide meets you at your hotel at 9am and drives you to the Western Group of Temples, the cluster of remaining structures from Khajuraho's original 20. The Kandariya Mahadev is the centerpiece: a massive temple decorated with over 870 statues and carvings that blend erotic imagery with scenes of daily life, warfare and devotion. You'll also walk through the Chaunset Yogini, dedicated to the Goddess Kali; the Chitragupta, which features an 11-headed Vishnu; and the Vishwanath, Nandi, Lakshmana and Visha temples, each built between the 9th and 12th centuries and each dedicated to Shiva. The guide explains the architectural style and the stories carved into the stone.
After the temples, you move into town to see how Khajuraho's economy works. Nearly every household runs a small business (shops, restaurants, budget hotels), and many families have converted their homes into workshops for handicrafts. You'll browse these local goods and get a sense of how tourism sustains the town. Lunch is a buffet meal (vegetarian options available if you request at booking), and you'll have time to rest before the final leg of the day.
In the early evening, you're driven back to your hotel, airport or rail station. If you want to stay longer, a 50-minute sound and light show runs at the Western Group complex in both Hindi and English, telling the story of the Chandela Kings and the temples' history from the 10th century to today. This show is not included in the tour price and runs as an optional add-on.

Is this one for you? This is a private guided tour, so you move at a steady pace with one guide rather than in a group, and the guide explains the temples' history and carvings as you walk. Choose it if you want the temples explained in detail and prefer not to navigate or research on your own. The eight-hour structure and included lunch mean you don't need to plan the day separately.
