The experience

You arrive in Srinagar and transfer directly to a houseboat on Dal Lake or a hotel, then take a shikara ride across the water in the evening while the day settles. The next morning you drive south toward Pahalgam through saffron fields and past the ruins of an 1100-year-old temple, then spend two days in that valley visiting Betab Valley and Aru Valley: the second a pony-trekking base 11 kilometers from town. From Pahalgam you drive four hours to Gulmarg, a meadow at 2,730 meters with views of snow-capped peaks and conifer forests. The golf course there is the highest 18-hole course in the world, and in winter the slopes draw skiers and sledders. You return to Srinagar for a half-day of sightseeing covering Shankaracharya temple and the Mughal gardens (Nishat Bagh and Shalimar) both on the shore of Dal Lake.

Day six is a day trip to Sonmarg, the Golden Meadow, where you can ride horses up to Thajiwas glacier and return to Srinagar by evening. The final morning you transfer to the airport. Throughout the week your private vehicle and driver stay with your group, and breakfast and dinner are included at your hotel or houseboat each night. Pony rides in Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonmarg cost extra, as do sledge rides on snow and the cable car at Gulmarg.

What happens on the first day when I arrive in Srinagar?

You're met at arrival and transferred to either a houseboat on Dal Lake or a hotel in Srinagar. In the evening you take a one-hour shikara ride on the lake, then the rest of the night is free for shopping or rest.

How long is the drive from Pahalgam to Gulmarg?

The drive from Pahalgam to Gulmarg covers 140 kilometers and takes approximately four hours. You travel through changing landscape from the valley floor to the high meadow.

What are Betab Valley and Aru Valley, and what do you do there?

Betab Valley is a scenic spot named after a Bollywood film shot there. You visit it on a day excursion from Pahalgam. Aru Valley lies 11 kilometers away and is known for meadows and mountains. It's a base camp for trekking to Kolhoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake, and pony rides are available there.

Is the cable car ride at Gulmarg included, or do I pay extra?

The cable car ride on the snow-covered slopes at Gulmarg is optional and paid directly on the day. The same applies to sledge rides and pony rides throughout the tour.
