The experience
Srinagar anchors the first and last days. On arrival, your guide meets you and takes you by private car to Dal Lake for a one-hour shikara ride, then to the Mughal Gardens: Shalimar Bagh (built in 1619 by Emperor Jahangir), Nishat Bagh with its twelve terraced levels, Chashme Shahi with its natural spring, and Pari Mahal on the Zabarwan mountain range overlooking the lake. You also visit Jamia Masjid in the old city and Hazratbal Shrine on the western shore, a 17th-century shrine housing a sacred relic. Your first night is on a houseboat in Nigeen Lake or Dal Lake.
Day two is a day trip to Pahalgam, about 90 kilometers south. The route passes through Pampore's saffron fields (the region's prized crop, especially vivid during the October and November bloom), and the Awantipora Ruins, 9th-century Hindu temples built by King Avantivarman with stone carvings and traditional Kashmiri architecture. In Pahalgam itself, you visit Aru Valley (12 km from town, surrounded by pine forests and the Lidder River), Betaab Valley (15 km away, named after a 1983 Bollywood film), Chandanwari (a mountain site 16 km out, the starting point of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage), and Baisaran Valley, known locally as Mini Switzerland, with rolling meadows and Himalayan views. You return to Srinagar for the night.
Day three takes you north to Gulmarg, 68 kilometers away. Tangmarg, the gateway town 13 km before Gulmarg, sits among forests and rolling hills. The main draw is the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world's highest cable cars, operating in two phases: Phase 1 rises to Kongdoori, and Phase 2 continues to Apharwat Peak, both offering views of snow-covered Himalayas and Kashmir's landscape (access to Phase 2 depends on weather). You stay another night in Srinagar. On the final morning, you have breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Srinagar Airport or railway station.
