The experience
Srinagar is where the tour starts and ends. Day one settles you into a hotel on Dal Lake, then moves through the Mughal Gardens (Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh) before a stop at a carpet weaving factory and the Shankaracharya Temple. The gardens sit on the lake's banks and the walk through them is the first real measure of the valley's scale.
Day two heads to Gulmarg, a hill station 52 km southeast of Srinagar that becomes a ski hub in winter. The drive passes through Tang Marg town, and once you arrive in the early afternoon, the Gondola cable car system takes you up for views from the height before the descent back down. Day three is the longest drive: 152 km to Pahalgam, passing through Pampore, Avantipura and Bijbehara on the way to the Lidder River valley. Pahalgam is known among mountain trekkers for its terrain, and the afternoon is left open to walk the valley itself.
The return to Srinagar on day four takes 2.5 hours. The afternoon includes the Jamia Masjid and Hari Parbat fort, both heritage sites, then a Shikara ride on Dal Lake at calm water. Day five is departure: breakfast at the hotel, then transfer to the airport. The private vehicle and English-speaking guide stay with the group throughout, and all accommodation, breakfast and dinner are arranged according to the itinerary.
