Start at the Flower Market before sunrise, then spend the day moving through Jaipur's forts, palaces and stepwells by private car.

A private car tour of Jaipur with a local guide covers the city's major monuments over a full day, beginning with an early visit to the Flower Market and a walk past 18th-century heritage buildings. The itinerary moves through Amer Town, Panna Meena Stepwell, Jal Mahal, Royal Gaitor, Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Isarlat Tower, Albert Hall Museum and Galtaji Temple. Hotel pickup and drop-off, a guide in your chosen language, bottled water and tea with snacks are included. Monument entry fees are separate.

The experience

Jaipur's Flower Market opens early, and the tour takes advantage of that window. If you book the 7:00 AM slot, your driver picks you up from your hotel and heads straight there. You'll walk past an 18th-century heritage building on the way in, then move through the market itself to see how flowers and vegetables are sold at the local level. Afterward, you stop at one of the oldest food stores in the area for masala chai and snacks (samosa or kachori) before the day's monument visits begin.

The route then moves outward and inward through the city. Amer Town, 11 kilometers away, holds Mughal and Rajput palaces, temples and intricate carvings. The Sheesh Mahal and Sila Devi Temple are the main draws. Panna Meena Ka Kund, a 16th-century stepwell tucked below a fortress, comes next. On the return toward the center, you pass Jal Mahal, the palace that rises from the middle of Man Sagar Lake, and stop at Royal Gaitor on the Nahargarh foothills to see the carved cenotaphs of three maharajas: Jai Singh II's marble monument sits under a dome supported by 20 pillars.

The city monuments fill the afternoon. Hawa Mahal, the five-story Wind Palace with its 87-degree lean and no foundation, is a photo stop. City Palace, built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, blends Mughal and Rajput styles and still houses the ruling royal family in its private sections. Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century astronomical observation site with about 20 fixed instruments, follows. Isarlat or Sargasuli Tower, a seven-story minaret from 1749, offers panoramic views from the top. Albert Hall Museum, the state's oldest and a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, rounds out the main stops. If time and energy allow, Galtaji Temple, 10 kilometers out and built into hillside crevices with natural spring water and sacred tanks, can be added. Your driver then takes you back to your hotel or wherever you'd like to end the day.

Is this one for you?Choose the sedan if you're traveling as a couple or small group. The SUV offers more space and comfort for families or groups of up to six. Either way, the early Flower Market slot means you'll see the market at its liveliest before the heat builds and the crowds arrive at the monuments later in the day.
