The experience
You start at Albert Hall Museum, where the guide shows you the exterior lit after dark: the building's architecture stands out against the night. Inside (if you choose to enter separately) are paintings, jewelry, carpets, sculptures and coins spanning the Gupta, Kushan, Delhi Sultanate, Mughal and British periods, but the real focus here is the walk ahead and the food waiting in the markets.
From there you head into Masala Chowk, where the guide takes you to specific vendors: crispy pyaaz kachori from Sampat Namkeen, daal baati churma from Jaipur Chaupati, pav bhaji from Pandit Pav Bhaji, gol gappas from Gopalji Chaat, and lassi or kulfi from Ravi Cold Drink. If you want South Indian food, dosa, idli and vada are also available. The market itself is narrow and crowded, built into the walled city's grid of pink and yellow buildings. Tripolia Bazar comes next: one of Jaipur's oldest markets, known for lac bangles, brassware and textiles, with vendors and shoppers filling the street. You pass Tripolia Gate, the 1734 entrance to City Palace that was reserved for royal families and blends Mughal, Rajput and European styles.
The walk continues through Choti Chaupar (also called Amer Chowk), a historically important square in the old city, and the flower market there: a display of roses, jasmine and marigolds where artisans make garlands for ceremonies and festivals. You'll see Roop Chaturbhuj Temple, a lesser-known heritage site near the more prominent Chaturbhuj Temple. Kishanpole Bazar, named after the Krishna-devoted rulers of Jaipur, is lined with historic mansions and serves as a gateway into the walled city. Before the tour ends, you stop at Lassiwala for the famous creamy lassi. The route concludes at Ajmeri Gate (also called Kishan Pol), one of the seven original gates built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1727, which opens onto Kishanpole Bazar and its tie-and-dye fabrics.
