The Experience

The drive from Delhi started before sunrise—still half asleep, I watched the city lights fade behind us. Our driver, Rajesh, was already humming softly to the radio. About halfway to Jaipur, we stopped for chai at a roadside stall. The steam curled up into the chilly air and I burned my tongue a little (worth it). We headed next to Hawa Mahal—the Palace of Breeze. It’s right in the middle of Jaipur’s chaos: scooters honking, women in bright saris weaving through traffic. Up close, those tiny windows really do let in every bit of wind; I leaned against one and felt it on my face, dusty and cool. Our guide laughed when I tried to pronounce “Hawa Mahal” properly (I definitely didn’t nail it). After that we wandered through Jantar Mantar—the old observatory. The sundials are huge; you can actually see their shadows move if you stand still long enough. There was this quiet moment where everything felt oddly precise—like time slowed down for a second.

Lunch was at a place with marble floors and ceiling fans spinning lazily overhead. I ordered something spicy by accident (again), but Rajesh just grinned and handed me more water. Later we stopped by Jal Mahal—the palace floating out on its lake. The light hit it just right so it almost glowed against the water; even now I remember that color. We had some time in the markets too—so many bangles and fabrics everywhere you look, people calling out prices or just smiling as you pass by. On the way back to Delhi I dozed off for a bit, thinking about how much fit into one day…honestly still feels like a blur.
