The experience

You start from your hotel and travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a local guide who speaks English. The route takes in Golconda Fort, a 16th-century stronghold west of the city where diamonds like the Koh-i-Noor were once mined from surrounding pits. The colossal stone walls and ruins reveal the fort's former grandeur as a centre of diamond trade. From there, the tour moves to Nehru Zoological Park, which opened in 1963 and spans 380 acres with habitat-simulated enclosures for endangered and critically endangered species.

The afternoon brings you to Charminar, the internationally recognized monument at Hyderabad's centre, built in 1591 to mark the end of a plague epidemic. Its minarets and domes showcase Islamic design, and a mosque inside holds Friday prayers. Nearby, Mecca Masjid, the second-largest mosque in India, sits in the historical district, with soil from Mecca embedded in bricks of its central arch. You also visit Salar Jung Museum, the third-largest museum in India, known for one of the world's largest one-man collections and located on the southern bank of the Musi river.

Birla Mandir, a Hindu temple built on an 85-metre hillock in 1976, and Hussain Sagar Lake, a sprawling artificial lake built in 1575 that connects Hyderabad and Secunderabad, round out the stops. The lake was constructed at a cost of about Rs. 2.5 lakhs and holds water year-round. Hotel drop-off concludes the day.
