The experience

The tour starts with Golconda Fort, the fortified citadel and former capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, built near the diamond mines that made the city a global trade center for Golconda Diamonds. From there you move to Chowmahalla Palace, the official residence of the Nizams of Hyderabad, then to Charminar: the 1591 monument and mosque that stands as the symbol of the city and one of India's most recognized structures. The guide ties these stops together with stories of how the city grew and what each landmark meant to the people who built it.

The afternoon takes you through Salar Jung Museum, which holds paintings, sculptures, carvings and manuscripts collected by the Salar Jung family, and then to Hussain Sagar Lake. Built in the 16th century by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, the heart-shaped lake has a monolithic Buddha statue on Gibraltar Rock in its center and gardens around its edge. You also visit Birla Mandir, a temple modeled on the Tirupati shrine and set 280 feet up Naubat Pahad hill, where the views of Hyderabad open up across the city. Local tips and restaurant recommendations come throughout the day.
