The Experience

I still remember the first time I saw Swargarohini’s north face from the Har Ki Dun trail. We’d just come out of a patch of pine forest — needles crunching underfoot, cold air sharp in my nose — and suddenly there it was, this wall of snow and rock dropping down so fast it made my stomach flip. Our guide, Sandeep, pointed out the line where no one’s ever climbed. He told us about the Pandavas’ path to heaven (I’d heard that story before but somehow it hit different up here). The sun was already low and everything felt gold and blue at once. My hands were freezing but I didn’t care.

The days blurred into each other after Sankri — early chai, slow climbs past stone houses in Osla where kids peeked out shyly (one gave me a wildflower; I kept it pressed in my notebook). It wasn’t always easy. The stretch to Kalkatidhar got me sweating like crazy even though the wind kept slapping my face. Sandeep would stop to show us tiny mountain herbs or just to let us catch our breath. Sometimes he’d laugh at our city shoes getting stuck in mud — “Next time, real boots!” he said. Lunches were simple but somehow tasted better than anything back home; maybe it was just hunger or maybe dal really does taste different at 3,000 meters.

Reaching Har Ki Dun felt almost quiet. Not silent — you could hear water somewhere below and the odd bird — but everyone just sort of stood there looking at Swargarohini. Marinda Tal was close by but honestly I barely noticed the lake because that view just swallowed everything else up for a while. On the way back down to Osla we got caught in a drizzle that turned the whole valley green and silver. My jacket still smells faintly of woodsmoke from that night’s campfire.
