The experience

The tour starts at Regal Cinema, an Art Deco theater in Colaba, where you meet Gufran over a cup of Indian tea. From there, the route moves to Sassoon Docks, one of the oldest docks in the city, built in 1875 and now one of the largest fish markets in Mumbai. You'll see how the market operates and watch the traditional hand-washing of laundry before heading into the slum itself.

Gufran has lived in Ganesh Murti Nagar for 23 years and runs Slum Care, a social initiative in the neighborhood. The heart of the tour is time spent in his home with his family and friends: a direct look at daily life in South Mumbai's largest slum, without the filter of a bus window or a distant vantage point. This is the same neighborhood where Gregory Roberts, author of the bestseller Shantaram, lived for an extended period while researching the book.

The whole experience runs two hours. You'll carry bottled water throughout, and tea is included at the start. The guide speaks English and Hindi, so the commentary is accessible depending on which language you follow more easily.
