Golkonda Fort opens the day: you climb 360 steps to the hilltop ruins of a 12th-century Hindu stronghold later rebuilt by the Qutb Shahi kings, with views across the city and the remains of gates, palaces, barracks, temples and mosques scattered across the slope. The Qutb Shahi tombs come next, a 16th- and 17th-century necropolis where Indo-Sarascenic architecture meets Persian glazed tiles, the burial grounds of kings, physicians and courtesans arranged around mosques and cisterns.

Chowmahallah Palace, an 18th-century seat of the Nizams, holds coronation halls, galleries, residential wings and collections of arms, porcelain, vintage cars and textiles from the rulers' personal use. Charminar, the 16th-century four-arched monument at the heart of the old city, sits ringed by bazaars selling bangles and textiles, with the Mecca Mosque (a 17th-century structure built by the Qutb Shahi sultans and one of India's largest) nearby. The tour ends at Laad Bazaar, a market of hundreds of shops selling lacquer bangles and traditional wear.
