The Experience
We turned off the main road just as the sun was starting to get that late-afternoon gold — you know the light I mean. Our guide, Preeti, waved us down a lane so narrow I almost brushed someone’s garden wall with my elbow. There was this faint smell of wet earth and frangipani. Kids zipped past on bikes, one of them shouting something in Konkani I definitely didn’t catch. It felt like Saligao was still waking up from its siesta.
The first stop was this church — apparently the only Gothic one in Goa. The spire looked almost out of place against the coconut trees. Preeti told us how early settlers made Saligao one of Goa’s more prosperous villages (she said it so matter-of-factly, but you could tell she was proud). We wandered past these huge Indo-Portuguese houses, all faded colors and ornate balconies. Some had paint peeling off in layers that looked almost deliberate. A woman sweeping her porch smiled at us; her bangles made this soft clinking sound that stuck with me for some reason.
I didn’t expect to be invited into someone’s home for high tea, honestly. The owners welcomed us like we were old friends — there were plates of bebinca and chai that tasted somehow richer than usual. We sat under a slow-moving fan, listening to stories about Goan artists who’d lived nearby and how each house had its own quirks (one had a secret well in the backyard). At some point I lost track of time; maybe it was the way the afternoon light hit those patterned tiles or just how unhurried everything felt.
