The experience
The tour begins with pickup from your hotel or railway station and heads straight to the Chinese fishing nets at the water's edge. The distinctive dropping nets that have defined Kochi's skyline for centuries. From there you move along the beach to see the steam boilers from Kochi Dry Dock, massive iron structures that powered ships since 1956, then walk through the remains of Fort Immanuel, built in 1503 as a Portuguese stronghold. St. Francis CSI Church, also from 1503, is the oldest European church in India and holds the burial place of explorer Vasco de Gama. You'll pass the Santa Cruz Basilica on the way, another heritage landmark that anchors the colonial quarter.
A tuk-tuk ride takes you inland to Dhobi Khana, the Dutch-built laundry station from 1720 where washermen still work by hand, then through the tight streets of Mattanchery to the fruit market on Palace Road and the spice market beyond: stalls lined with ginger, cloves, cardamom, turmeric and pepper. You'll stop for meter tea, a local specialty served in a measured glass, and have time to browse. The tour includes a visit to a local Brahmin family's home, where you'll watch a Kolam demonstration (the traditional practice of drawing intricate patterns with sparkling powders or fresh flowers at the entrance to invite good fortune), and you're invited to try drawing some lines yourself.
Your guide speaks English throughout, and the pace is built for walking and stopping rather than rushing between sites. Hotel drop-off ends the tour. Wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders, as this is required for entry to the church and other places of worship. A minimum of two people per booking is required.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Infant (under 5): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What are the Chinese fishing nets and why are they famous in Kochi?
The Chinese fishing nets are large wooden structures with nets that drop into the water and are hauled back up by hand: a fishing method brought to Kerala by traders from the court of Kublai Khan. They've become the symbol of Kochi and are one of the first stops on the tour because they're instantly recognizable and still in use by local fishermen.
Will I have time to shop at the spice market, or is it just a quick stop?
The spice market is a proper stop where you can browse and buy. The tour passes through Mattanchery's streets and reaches the market as part of the morning itinerary, so you'll have time to look at the stalls and purchase if you want to.
What exactly is a Kolam and why do families make them?
A Kolam is a traditional pattern drawn at the entrance to a home using sparkling powders, rice flour, or fresh flowers. It's believed to invite Goddess Lakshmi and bring luck and prosperity to the household. During the tour, you'll watch a Brahmin family demonstrate the practice and try drawing some lines yourself.
Is the tuk-tuk ride included, or do I pay extra for that part?
The tuk-tuk ride through Mattanchery is included in the tour price. It's one of the most common ways to get around Kochi, and it's part of the experience of moving through the city's narrow streets.
What's included in the tour price and what do I need to pay for separately?
Hotel pickup and drop-off, the guide, all transport by private vehicle and tuk-tuk, entry fees to the sites, a cup of tea, and all taxes are included. Meter tea (the local specialty tea stop) is on a direct payment basis, meaning you pay for it on the spot if you order it.
